Training Maintenance

Options for Dive Safety Training

There are four options for dive safety training at UBC:

  1. Science Diver Level 1 (maximum depth of 20m)
  2. Science Diver Level 2 (maximum depth of 40m)
  3. Dive Surface Attendant
  4. Snorkel

Once UBC’s DSO (dive.safety@ubc.ca) has approved your registration, you can sign up to be qualified as a Level 1 (20m/60ft) or a Level 2 (40m/130ft) diver as follows:

Diver in Training (DIT)

  • Registered for the CAUS 1 Training Program
  • Can only dive when the DSO or a qualified CAUS Level I/II diver present
  • Diving must occur during daylight hours

Level 1

  • Completion of the scientific dive theory course and exam with a minimum grade of 80%
  • Dive accident management training
  • Oxygen administration for divers
  • Swimming / diving skills evaluation (pool/confined water)
    • Demonstrate a survival float/swim without any aids for a minimum of 20 minutes
    • Swim without aids (no fins etc) for 200 m
    • Swim with aids (mask, fin, snorkel) for 400 m
    • Conduct a head first skin dive to retrieve an object in 3 m of water.
  • Ocean dives. Completion of a minimum of 25 logged dives with 15 hours of bottom time
    • A minimum of 4 dives to 20 m under the direct supervision of the DSO
  • Act as the Diver In Charge (Dive Supervisor) for a minimum of one dive day and complete a Dive Project which is approved by the DSO

Level 2

  • Be qualified as a Level 1
  • Complete an exam with a minimum grade of 80%
  • Plan and execute four dives between 20m to 40m, with at least to 40m under the direct supervision of the DSO.

Surface Attendant

  • Completion of the scientific dive theory course and exam with a minimum grade of 80%
  • Dive accident management training
  • Oxygen administration for divers

Snorkel

  • Swimming / diving skills evaluation (pool/confined water)
    • Demonstrate a survival float/swim without any aids for a minimum of 20 minutes
    • Swim without aids (no fins etc) for 200 m
    • Swim with aids (mask, fin, snorkel) for 400 m
    • Conduct a head first skin dive to retrieve an object in 3 m of water
  • Current First Aid
  • Modification of Dive Accident Management course

Qualification Maintenance

Maintaining Certification

To remain a current CAUS diver, you must:

  • Log a minimum of 12 dives during any 12 month period (at least one dive must be to the depth of prescribed qualification (Level 1, Level 2)).
  • Be current in required qualifications (e.g. dive medical, first aid).
  • Conduct an annual check out dive with the DSO
