Safety & Advisory Committees

UBC supports both Safety & Advisory Committees. Advisory Committees are comprised of knowledgeable, prominent and credible members of the community who provide the University with information, informed opinion, and advice in matters that promote safety in their specific field of expertise. Safety Committees bring together representatives of the employer & workers to identify and support the employer’s duty to ensure health & safety issues in the workplace.

Research Compliance Committees

Biosafety Committee

The UBC Biosafety Committee serves as an expert committee that can provide the University with information, informed opinion, and advice in matters that promote biological safety for UBC faculty, staff, students, visitors and the community. The purpose of the Committee is to help people solve biosafety problems and to assist researchers with their work. It also reviews and approves research occurring under the UBC Human Pathogens and Toxins Act License.

Radiation Safety Committee

The UBC Advisory Committee on Radioisotopes and Radiation Hazards includes faculty members selected because of their expertise or stake in radiation safety matters.

UBC’s Policy SC1 authorizes this committee to act as the agent for the University in all matters of acquisition, control, review and mediation arising from the use or production of radioactive materials and ionizing radiation at the University.

Members of the committee advise UBC management and the RSO on radiation safety matters in general, and the effectiveness of radiation safety programs within the University.

Chemical Safety Committee

The UBC Chemical Safety Committee includes faculty members and staff from a variety of departments at UBC selected because of their expertise or stake in chemical safety matters.

UBC’s Policy SC1 articulates the University’s objective of providing a safe, healthy and secure environment for all members of faculty and staff, students and visitors, and to delineate responsibility for achieving it. The UBC Chemical Safety committee acts within this framework on behalf of the University in matters of acquisition, control, review and mediation arising from the use of hazardous chemicals at the University.

Members of the committee advise UBC management and the Chemical & Radiation Safety Officer on chemical safety matters in general, and the effectiveness of chemical safety programs within the University.

Dive Safety Committee

Also known as the UBC Diving Control Board, this Committee reviews and approves scientific diving conducted by UBC employees and students as part of their UBC activities, based on upon compliance with the UBC Dive Safety Program. Behavioural Research Ethics Board

Behavioural Research ethics review is a process of initial and ongoing reviewing and monitoring of research focused on the relationship between people and their surroundings, including how people interact with each other, their communities, and institutional systems. Clinical Research ethics review is a process of initial and ongoing review and monitoring of research that evaluates the effects of one or more health-related interventions on health outcomes. Development Review Committee

Emergency Management Steering Committee

The Emergency Management Steering Committee (EPMS), comprised of members from staff and faculty, actively provides guidance and advice to the Emergency Planning Office and undertakes activities to further the effectiveness of emergency management at UBC.

Environmental Management Systems Advisory Committee

The Environmental Management Systems Advisory Committee (EMS) is guided by the Environmental Management System Advisory Committee, which is comprised of the following individuals:
