Suspicious object
If you encounter a suspicious object or package on campus, it’s important to remain calm and follow these safety steps.
Notice a suspicious object
- Do not touch or disturb the object.
- Note the location and description of the object.
- Call Campus Security immediately at 604-822-2222.
- Wait for instructions from Campus Security or first responders.
- Be prepared to evacuate if directed.
Suspicious envelope or package
- If you have opened the letter, or package, set it down gently where you first read/opened it. Leave it alone, remain calm and avoid sudden movements.
- Inform a co-worker nearby about what has happened and ask them to call Campus Security at 604-822-2222.
- Avoid contact with others, move to a separate area and stay there.
- Do not attempt to clean up or move the item.
- Remain calm. Exposure does not mean that you will become sick. Campus Security will provide instructions on next steps, symptoms to watch for, and treatment if needed.
Warning signs of suspicious letters or packages:
Be alert for items that show any of the following:
- No return address, postmark or name of sender is unusual.
- Excessive or inadequate postage.
- Handwritten or poorly typed addresses.
- Misspelling of common words.
- Restrictive markings such as “Confidential”, “Personal”, etc.
- Unusual or excessive weight and/or a feeling of a powdery substance.
- Lopsided, rigid, or bulky shape.
- Rub-on block-style lettering or strange wrapping.
- Any mention of contamination or threat.
