Shelter-in-place
In certain emergencies, it may be safer to stay indoors rather than evacuate. This is known as shelter-in-place, a protective action used when an environmental hazard makes it unsafe to be outdoors. In such situations, having an emergency kit on hand can be extremely helpful, especially if sheltering for an extended period.
You may be instructed to shelter-in-place during events that pose a risk to health and safety.
What to do
Seek and share shelter
- If outside, move indoors immediately. Enter the closest building possible.
- Avoid rooms with windows that cannot be sealed.
Seal the space
- Close and seal exterior doors and windows.
Stay calm, alert, and informed
- Keep your phone on and monitor updates on ubc.ca, local radio, or TV for more information.
- Minimize noise, conserve battery power and avoid unnecessary calls.
- Be alert to unusual sounds or smells that may signal ongoing hazards.
Stay
- Remain in the secure location until additional information is provided by emergency personnel.
