Last week, Safety & Risk Services had the exciting opportunity to host UBC President, Dr. Benoit Bacon and our very own Vice-President, Frank Laezza, for an immersive, behind-the-scenes look at the incredible work our team does every day!
Their tour kicked off at the Tennis Centre, where the Emergency Management & Continuity Planning team highlighted our impressive mass care capabilities. They also received key updates on two critical infrastructure initiatives, our Potable Water and Emergency Power Capital Projects, which highlight the strides we’re making toward resilience and preparedness.

The tour viewed a monitoring water well (from left to right: Mariyam Syed, Cassandra Torres, Nadine Anseeuw, Paul Gill, Benoit Bacon, Frank Laezza).
Their next stop was Research Health & Safety. They observed an ongoing Biological Safety practical session and gained insight into the vital work our teams are doing to support research safety. Over at UBC Hospital, they explored the SRS Research Safety space, which is used for training and monitoring radiation exposure.
The visit wrapped up with a stop at the Campus Security office, where the team at the Communications Operations Centre demonstrated how cameras are used to support major campus events. President Bacon and Frank also connected with the Campus Security teams to learn about their structure and the essential roles they play in keeping our campus safe.
The tour was a huge success! A big thank you to everyone who contributed to making this visit both informative and inspiring.
