An automated external defibrillator (AED) is an easy-to-use, portable device that can restart a person’s heart. If someone unexpectedly collapses, is unresponsive and not breathing, that person is likely experiencing cardiac arrest. Their heart has stopped beating and they are at a high risk of dying.
Anyone can use an AED. You don’t have to be a medical professional. The device will only administer an electrical shock if the heart needs it. AEDs are available in various models, but they all operate in fundamentally the same way.
How to use an AED:
- Turn the power on.
- Remove the person’s clothing from chest and attach the AED pads to the person’s bare chest.
- Press the shock button if the voice prompt tells you to.
An AED is located outside of the USB First Aid Room. Additional AED locations on UBC Vancouver Campus can be found at maps.gis.ubc.ca/webmaps/aed/.
