Jack Wong joins Safety & Risk Services with over 10 years of professional experience in technology and and many years in the industry. Jack has lead teams and projects across all areas of IT Operations, Application Security, and Information Security. His experience covers a broad range of fields including SaaS operations, application security, data networking, web, database, GRC, and datacenter operations for various small to Fortune 100 companies. Jack joins us from ISACA Vancouver where he was the Governance, Risk and Compliance Director and the Western Hemisphere Regional Director for CyberSci.
Tom Powers joins Safety & Risk Services from UBC IT’s Identity & Access Management team where he supported operations in Communications & Collaboration Services (Cooltech), and the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Security Operations team. In his four years at CISO, Tom advised IT units for faculties and departments with the implementation of Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) platforms and with the initial response to security incidents.
In his new role as Lead Advisor, Information Security Compliance, Tom is excited to continue supporting UBC’s mission as a world class teaching and research university. Tom will be building new support relationships across the University while leveraging past relationships.
Jeff de Castro joins Safety & Risk Services’ PrISM as part of the Compliance Support Program. Prior to joining SRS, Jeff spent the last 7 years in the public sector, including the BC Public Service Ministries, Island Health – Vancouver Island Health Authority, and more recently, as the Ministry Information Security Officer for the BC Ministry Of Children & Family Development, where he lead all their cybersecurity-related efforts. He is excited to be joining the university and look forward to understanding information security in the higher education sector and taking on various challenges/areas of improvement.
Jeff holds a Software Engineering Technology Diploma by the Centennial College and relevant cybersecurity certifications. Outside of work, Jeff enjoys writing, playing music, fair-weather hiking, and is always on the hunt for the best shawarma in the city.
