As mentioned in last month’s announcement, Safety & Risk Services is renaming the division Occupational & Research Health & Safety to Occupational Health & Safety, and making changes to the reporting structures to strengthen alignment with the university and VPFO’s strategic priorities.
Janet Hankins promoted to Manager – Research Compliance and Occupational Hygiene
In her new role, Janet will oversee and coordinate a team of safety advisors and associates focused on the identification, evaluation, and control of hazardous substances and conditions, as well as the corresponding health protection programming.
Janet has been with UBC for over 20 years and SRS for almost 10 years and has led the Biological & Radiation Safety team since 2016.
When not at work, Janet tries to spend her time outside, gardening, sailing, and exploring beaches & forests with her dog.
Paul Gill promoted to Manager, Health & Safety Partnerships
With over 13 years of experience at UBC, Paul leads a team of health and safety specialists and works with units across the university to implement safety programs. He strives to create an environment where everyone in the community has the tools they need to enjoy a safe and positive UBC experience.
In his spare time, Paul likes to enjoy the perks and activities that come with living on the west coast.
Paul Nakagawa promoted to Manager – Safety Program Management and Systems
Paul Nakagawa began his career at UBC in 2001 where he worked in research safety as a Biological Safety Associate. Over the next 18 years, he took on many roles in occupational and research safety and emergency management.
For the last decade, he has been the Safety Programs Advisor where he was involved in the consolidation and rewrite of UBC’s Health and Safety Policy, as well as leading the restructure of the university’s Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSC).
Outside of work, Paul loves playing golf and hockey and coaching his three kids in their various sporting activities.
