Summer fire risk on the increase

The fire danger rating in areas surrounding both UBC campuses has been raised to high, or even extreme in certain areas of the Okanagan Valley. With the close-knit urban-wildland interface on our campuses, we would like to remind everyone to be extra vigilant with any flammable materials or hot machinery that you might be using.

Fires often start as small accidental ignitions, which can quickly spread to surrounding grasslands, forests, and even buildings. The landscaped mulch beds throughout campus are also extremely vulnerable to catching fire. Campfires, fireworks, or any other type of open flame are also not allowed anywhere on campus. Smoking should be confined to designated areas with appropriate disposal.

If you see smoke where it shouldn’t be, call 9-1-1 and report it to Campus Security. For more information on interface fires please visit Safety & Risk Services’ interface fire page.
