Emergency Management @UBC wants you to get ready for a seismic emergency

This October, Safety & Risk Services wants you to focus on emergency preparedness, and launching two events on campus – IBC Shake Zone and ShakeOut BC. Practice what to do when an earthquake strikes, and once the shaking stops. Learn more about emergency preparedness and what to do in the event of an earthquake.

We all have a role in making our campus safe. Be pro-active, and learn more about emergency preparedness at srs.ubc.ca/emergency.

Ride the IBC Shake Zone Earthquake Simulator: October 10 & 11, University Commons
UBC Safety & Risk Services has invited the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) to set-up a portable earthquake simulator on University Commons, by the AMS Student Nest. The Shake Zone is a portable earthquake simulator for riders to experience the “intensity” of a large earthquake. Riders in the simulator will experience about 25 seconds of motion.

Get ready to ShakeOut BC: October 19, 10:19 a.m.
Participate in the 2017 Great British Columbia ShakeOut earthquake drill by practicing DROP! COVER! HOLD ON! Wait for the shaking to stop and count to 60 to allow time for debris to fall, before moving. If you’re outside, stay outside. If you’re inside, stay inside, unless there is a fire or the building is in danger of collapsing. If you’re in a moving vehicle, stop in a clear area, away from falling debris, and stay inside the vehicle. ShakeOut BC is a timely annual reminder for everyone to learn the risks, get prepared, and make a plan in the event of an earthquake.
