Whether you work in a lab, animal facility, workshop, museum — or even an office, you may come into contact with sensitizers at your workplace.
Sensitizers are chemical and biological agents that can trigger an allergic response following contact and damaged immune response with repeated exposure. Once sensitized, the process is irreversible and the individual will always experience an allergic reaction upon exposure to the trigger substance, even in trace quantities, often resulting in a permanent change of occupation.
UBC Safety & Risk Services has invited industry and academia experts to educate the community on why sensitization is an important workplace safety issue and how to protect yourself.

Our speakers
Sensitizing agents are the least well-understood exposures that health and safety professionals have to evaluate and control. Once an employee becomes sensitized to something in the workplace, exposure control becomes a challenge to protect the health and wellbeing of the employee. Dr. Bartlett will discuss the “how” of sensitization, with some examples of why this is such an important workplace safety issue.
