UBC holds and offers emergency training, exercising, and engagement programs to better prepare individuals and the institution for real emergencies. UBC also runs a campus-wide emergency scenario training, with external agencies participating, as they would during a real event. These planned and controlled emergency exercises are designed to practice components of the UBC Emergency Management Plan, including the activation of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). Training courses are offered in advance for individuals with preparedness and/or specialized technical roles within the UBC Emergency Management Plan.

Training opportunities
UBC offers no-cost emergency management training throughout the year for all faculty and staff. The courses are designed to cater to all experience levels—whether you’re new to emergency preparedness or an experienced responder seeking refreshers or advanced skills.
General and specialized training
- Active Shooter Preparedness Training – A online training module that presents and discusses responses people could take if they encounter an active shooter.
- Floor Warden Training – An online training module that outlines the roles and responsibilities of floor wardens in various emergency situations.
- For hands-on Fire Extinguisher training at the UBC Vancouver Campus, please visit the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services hosted website — this training is offered externally and costs $45 per person).
- EOC Essentials – An online training module based on the British Columbia Emergency Response Management System (BCERMS) framework and the BC Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) “all hazards” approach. Training is intended for UBC faculty and staff members interested in joining/participating in Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) activities and activations.
- EOC Specialized Training – EOC Essentials is the foundation for specialized EOC training. Identified staff may receive additional course invites for more hands-on targeted training.
- Emergency Response Team (ERT) Training – Training for staff members to become Emergency Response Team members. These ERTs receive instruction in Rapid Building Damage Assessment (ACT20).
