Respiratory protection is used when there is a potential for exposure to hazardous levels of airborne contaminants (e.g. particulates, biologicals, gases & vapours) or in oxygen deficient environments.
There are various types of respirators. A hazard assessment will determine what respirator will be required for your task. Only NIOSH certified respirators are to be used.
Tips on selection, use, and care
- Respirator and Cartridge Selection: Speak with your supervisor for the respirator requirements. Select cartridges/filters that are appropriate for the contaminants you will be exposed to. For example, P100 filters only protect against particulate and not vapours (e.g. paint).
- Clean Shaven: A single human hair is larger than most airborne contaminants. It is important to have a good seal where your face contacts the respirator.
- Inspection: Visually check your respirator before each use. Check for damage (e.g. cracks).
- Respirator Fit & Seal Checks: At a minimum, a respirator fit test is required prior to initial use and annually thereafter. Perform positive and negative seal checks prior to each use.
- Clean and Store: Use a respirator wipe or soap and water after each use. Store in a clean and dry environment, away from contaminants.
